You can do all kinds of stuff in modern, so why not cast Karn on turn 3? I’ve been playing Tron on and off since the deck first started cropping up on magic online, and I don’t really have any other modern decks in paper. I’ve practiced with Grixis Delver Online, and have most of the pieces to a few other decks, but it’s not worth spending money if I think Tron is already a decent pick for the meta – which I did! Jund is back in full force, and Tron is pretty good against Jund. Not to mention all the random grixis lists running around – between Grixis delver, Grixis twin, and Partick Chapin’s… whatever you want to call it, tron only seems to have a bad time against twin. The hip new 3-color version of that doesn’t even have blood moon out of the sideboard, so how much worse could that be than regular twin? I admit I haven’t tested against Grixis twin yet, but the UR Twin matchup was never as bad as everyone told me (post-board at least), and the more controlling a Twin deck tries to be, the more it sacrifices its tron game. Collected company decks tend to have trouble with 8 maindeck sweepers. Tron has a hard time against affinity, but I suspect that should be at a minimum as kolaghan’s commands flood the meta. Burn is always playable, but I’m comfortable with that matchup post-board. The only things I really felt intimidated by coming into Baltimore were the random combo decks – amulet bloom, storm, ad nauseum, etc.
I didn’t get much sleep the night before this tournament. I have trouble sleeping when I’m excited to spend a zillion hours playing magic the next day, and that tends to be the worst part of these things. I probably didn’t get to sleep until 2 in the morning - then the cat woke me up at 6 am, and I ran on coffee all day. I drove an hour and a half to get there and register with a friend, and I didn’t do as well as I’d like. I wasn’t coherent for a few of the rounds, and had a lot of trouble piecing together the situations I clearly remember. I’d advise everyone to go to bed early, but I did that, and lying in bed for a few hours didn’t really help.
Round 1: Gary with Burn
Game 1: This wasn’t what I wanted to face round 1, and I started the day with a mulligan to 5 on the play. Fortunately, I’ve found that tron mulligans pretty well. The 5 contained urzatron, Karn, and a bauble - SNAP keep. He started out with 7 cards and a goblin guide turn 1, and I assumed I was in for a beating. Turn 2 he played Eidolon, which is awkward when I’m only casting bombs. Karn ate the Eidolon and a bolt effect (I want to say boros charm because it was definitely a 2 mana thing), and he played a second goblin guide. I ate more damage, but by this point I had drawn a land off of every goblin guide trigger, and it didn’t even feel like a mulligan. Turn 4 I casted Ancient Stirrings to find a Wurmcoil as the 5th card, then immediately played it. The next turn, he played a grim lavamancer and at least one other creature, which just stayed on the board in front of wurmcoil. The next turn I swung with wurmcoil to gain 6 and then immediately o-stoned his flooded board. He conceded shortly after.

I often take out Emrakul in hyper aggressive matchups, and this is the only time I did it all day and felt good about it. I also want to point out that I almost didn’t want to put the 4th Nature’s claim in, but realized that was a terrible plan after shuffling the deck a bit and thinking about it.
Game 2: Pleased with myself, I kept a 7 that involved a Wurmcoil, a fast tron, and a nature’s claim. He starts the game without creatures, opting to burn straight to my face instead. Wurmcoil comes down turn 3. He attempts to Destructive Revelry it when I attack, and I claim it in response. He then immediately bolts the lifelink token. I dig just a bit and find a second Wurmcoil by turn 5 or so. The same sequence happens again. I also Nature’s claim something else of mine that I can’t remember, but I know that my life total went up by 4 for a third time. I eventually find and swing a third wurmcoil, at this point with an o-stone on board, and have to crack the o-stone to stop myself from dying to a deflecting palm (I was at 4 life here). He untaps, reveals two fetches left in hand, and concedes to my lifelink wurm token and eye of ugin fetching the fourth wurmcoil. 1-0
Round 2: Karl (with a K) with Amulet Bloom
Game 1: I’m 90% sure I died to a turn 3 or 4 hive mind kill, but there wasn’t much counterplay. I think I kept a turn 3 Wurmcoil hand instead of a Karn one, and that doesn’t really matter when you can’t pay for summoner’s pact.

Slaughter games comes in against all the combo decks, amulet included. The fourth Nature’s claim and the third spellskite were considered, but I’m honestly not sure what else to take out – Karn is too good here, and the nuts and bolts of the deck are just as important. Claim only really hits Amulet, which is good, but not integral to their plan. Sure it also hits Hive Mind, but if they play how they should, then they won’t cast it until they have a pact, in which case claim does nothing anyways. Spellskite shuts down Slayers’ Stronghold on titan, which is good, but only brings them to a normal speed instead of instantly killing us. Ugin does almost nothing. Wurmcoil is okay once we establish some sort of parity in which they don’t immediately kill us, but I don’t want it on turn 3. Loam/ghost quarter is because we can’t all afford to buy Crucible of Worlds, and Loam gets the job done when our game plan is to force them to go long.
Game 2: I slowed him down by claiming the amulet on turn 1 and ghost quartering a bounceland on turn 2. I searched for the second ghost quarter and sat on it so that he couldn’t play anything he wasn’t ready to let die to it. I was holding wurmcoil and tron for a few turns while I held up quarter and claim while continuing to dig for loam/karn. At one point he plays an amulet, then plays a bounceland. With the untap trigger on the stack, I ghost quarter it and claim his amulet. Eventually he gets to a point where he main phases a pact with 5 mana (?), then I popped a few baubles to draw into into loam and quarter his second green source on my turn, leaving him dead on upkeep.
Game 3: He mulled to 5 here. I kept quarter, claim, fast tron, and probably some other cards. He didn’t play any bouncelands immediately (I think he assumed I was sandbagging the quarter), and spent the first several turns using the counters on 3 gemstone mines to dig for things. I claimed an amulet at some point, and quartered a grull turf at another. Karn got online eventually to exile lands, which prevented him from playing bounce lands one at a time for fear of being set back a turn. Eventually he played bloom to dump a hand full of lands, at which point I was 2 turns away from casting the emrakul I had drawn. He was going to get to 6 no matter what I did next turn, and I had the choice of playing a second green 1-mana land to play around a summoner’s pact kill (he had something like 2 or 3 cards left, I honestly can’t remember), or playing a 2-mana tron land so that I could accelerate to cast emrakul next turn and deny him another draw step. I went with the get-emrakul-faster play, and it ended up being right. He happened to not have hive mind on that turn, but I’m curious what people think about this line. 2-0
Round 3: Dan with Ad Nauseum Unlife
Game 1: I had a wurmcoil and an oblivion stone, but let’s be honest - the only thing that interacts with this deck in the main is a fast Karn. I went through his deck as he resolved Ad Nauseum to refresh my memory and then scooped.

The plan is to hope Nature’s claim slows him down, claim an unlife in response to suicidal things if they let you, cast karn on turn 3 if that’s possible, and cast slaughter games on turn 4 if that’s possible. That sounds pretty hard because it is pretty hard; but if they’re slow enough, then even just Karn can get the job done. In retrospect, ghost quarter probably should have come in for Ugin. I don’t remember seeing any basics during these games despite all the versions I’d seen before having at least some basic lands.
Game 2: I kept a hand with slaughter games. It’s was the only card that mattered in my head. I kind of wanted a 3rd one. And a 4th. I Nature’s Claimed something early in the game – that could have been one of a few things, I don’t remember what exactly - and got a Slaughter Games off before he found ad nauseum. He casted spoils of the vault in response, revealed 4 cards for for Ad Nauseum, then casted Ad Nauseum revealing 25 or so cards before he stopped when his life total hit 3. I looked through the cards he revealed, including two angel’s grace, two simian spirit guides, a second ad nauseum, a lab maniac, and at least one Lightning Storm. I count and make sure he doesn’t have enough lands to kill me with lightning storm, name ad nauseum, and pass the turn. He does some counting, tanks for a bit, casts come cantrips, and concedes.
Game 3: I kept another slaughter games hand since it seemed to work alright last time. He had duress this time. I didn’t have a Karn to pressure him, and drew a lot of land. He killed me when he found the pieces. 2-1
Round 4: Mark with (you guessed it) Ad Nauseum Unlife
Mark was very serious. It honestly made me uncomfortable how good his poker face was. I like to be very friendly when I play magic, probably to the point of a fault if I’m tired and tilted. This match threw me off a bit. This is obviously the result of my secretly being a filthy casual.
Game 1: Mark suspends a lotus bloom on turn 1 and I get that really sinking feeling when your girlfriend brings up some old stuff you just didn’t want to talk about any more. This coupled with the lack of sleep and his rather excited friend coming up to talk about how well he was doing in standard halfway through the match probably made it clear that I was pretty uncomfortable. On his second turn, he mutters something like “missed the trigger” as he draws and doesn’t take a counter off his own lotus bloom. I appreciated the honesty, but I didn’t even notice. I didn’t keep a fast enough hand anyway, and did nothing while Mark cantripped. I was spacing out and waiting for the turn to pass so I could try to draw what I needed. Mark passed the turn, and instinctively I crack an expedition map on end step. Mark and his friend said something to each other really quickly that I missed, and then cranked the volume up to 11 and called for a judge. I nearly crapped my pants. They have a brief discussion in front of everyone about how Mark played a Sleight of Hand as if he were scrying, and had put two cards on the bottom of his deck without putting one in hand. He admitted that he did it accidentally, the judges fixed it. He got a warning, and everyone seemed totally chill about the whole thing, but I spent the rest of the game rattled. I may or may not have been staring at a hand full of threats and pyroclasms while being unable to draw the third tron piece. I scoop to ad nauseum, but he insists on playing it out to make sure I knew what was happening (the judge was nearby still) and this didn’t help the awkward tension.
Same as round 3, except I accidentally board out a bunch of my hope and it doesn’t come back until round 6.
Game 2: I keep a hand with a nature’s claim, baubles, and lands as far as I remember. Prooooobably could have mulled. My opponent started the game by suspending two lotus blooms. I had nothing but claim, and was broadcasting to the world that I was sitting on it as he played a couple pentad prisms to dig and I tanked about whether to get rid of them. I started wondering how nature’s claims really even helped me in the matchup. I decided to claim the first lotus bloom on upkeep in response to the second because he was on 2 (maybe 3?) lands and if he needed to get a piece, then I wanted to force him to find it before his draw step. To this he casted spoils and went off on his upkeep. Spoils of the vaulted through TWENTY FOUR cards to find angel’s grace and won from there. He was at 1 life because I had opted to use grove of the burnwillows to claim the bloom instead of cracking my bauble. I believe I was saving the bauble to use as a black source for the slaughter games in my hand when I drew a 4th land – so not really a misplay, but it still added to the tilt factor.
Round 5: Dylan with Elves
Game 1: I have fast wurmcoil followed by o-stone while he starts doing elf things. He doesn’t develop his board as fast as he could as I sit on the o-stone in play. In the meantime I played a second wurmcoil engine onto a board that I was intending to wrath in the next couple turns, so I know I was tilting really hard. The turn I cast wurmcoil, he chords for ezuri with 3 irrelevant elves and no mana left. Instead of immediately killing his board, I was out of mana because I had cast my second wurmcoil engine. This was the play that convinced me that I needed coffee. On the NEXT turn, opponent used 4 of his 5 mana to cast collected company. This was another bad play, because I could have cracked the stone in response to this, but I was thinking “I’m going to get 2 more elves with my o-stone.” He got elvish archdruid and heritage druid, giving him the mana to regenerate his board. I used the stone to kill ezuri anyways. He played another on his next turn, and I couldn’t find more sweepers before dying to archdruids and overruns a few turns later.

Game 2: I kept a hand with an oblivion stone, he kept a nut draw. There were 5 or 6 elves on the board by turn 2. I think I o-stoned an ezuri and maybe 1 or 2 other things? He eventually casted (I’m in love with the) CoCo for burrenton forge tender and elvish archdruid on my end step, which was exactsies when he swung on his next turn. I don’t think I could have won this game without an early pyroclasm, and I think I underestimated elves by thinking a turn 4 wrath would be enough. I was pretty sad after losing to one of my best matchups, game one to obvious misplays, and decided to get coffee. 2-3
Round 6: Brett with Abzan CoCo
I had coffee and was ready to play magic again. It was as simple as that. There really was no way to qualify top 32 at this point, but I like playing magic, so I kept going.
Game 1: Brett had a slow draw, and I had turn 4 ugin to clear it up. Ugin just went to ultimate with no resistance, and he scooped in response.

I honestly don’t remember if Spellskite was what I took out, but they seem like the best candidate by far to me today.
Game 2: He played a faster game with some accelerators, but I had turn 2 pyroclasm into turn 3 Karn, and that was more than enough to run away with the game. I exiled everything he drew and eventually cast emrakul. Sometimes it’s just that simple. RG Tron grew up feeding on Jund and Melira combo, and they’re still some of the best matchups. 3-3
Round 7: Andrew with Skred Red
You might think that maindeck Blood Moons do something, but you’d be wrong.
Game 1: He played boros reckoner. I played wurmcoil engine, which he quickly dumped a hand of removal into to get rid of. I then played Ugin, killed his reckoner, and Ugin just ran away with the game again. I dumped lands from hand with Ugin’s -10 and casted emrakul instead of putting him into play so that he didn’t get another turn. It was kind of brutal.

I knew he was on Blood moon, but I boarded in Loam because since this matchup is so terrible for him that I figured he might be supplementing it with Stone Rain effects.
Game 2: He mulled down to 5, presumably to find blood moon. He found it, but I had the Nature’s Claim. Karn took care of a few things while I made my way to Emrakul. I’d never played this matchup before, but it felt pretty unfair. 4-3
Round 8: Eric with Bant Hexproof/Bogles
At this point I was delirious from coffee and lack of sleep and was just kind of jokingly rambling on like my opponent was an old friend. “Turn one fetch for a shocked Temple Garden? Oh man what’s the turn one play? Bogles! Crap! This is a terrible matchup for me! Play noble heirarchs and things that die to pyroclasm instead - I do a lot better against that sort of thing.” He seemed in good spirits about it, but I honestly felt like I was the drunk asshole at the party or something. I hope I didn’t annoy the two people on either side of me as I pointed out (after game 1) that we were all three playing tron.
Game 1: Like I said, fetch into a bogle on the play, and he just voltronned it up with enchantments since turn 2 spellskite couldn’t redirect the daybreak coronet. He beat me down faster than turn 3 wurmcoil could race.

I was kind of shaky on boarding here. Karn hits enchantments, but they’re beating my face in so I figured I’d rather just have Wurmcoils and Aura Hate than a pyroclasm for things that may or may not be way out of its range, Karn that only really hits one enchantment before letting me die, and Emrakul who comes down way after the important turns happen.
Game 2: He started the game with Leyline of Sanctity in play and I knew he wasn’t sure how to deal with this matchup. He had a slow hand, the leyline did nothing, and I let him buff an invisible stalker with things before casting Ugin to exile everything. After a few turns of Ugin’s +2 he scooped to a Wurmcoil Engine. During this game there was a point where I could have just been casting Emrakul instead of getting multiple wurmcoils, so I put the spaghetti monster back in for the 4th Wurmcoil.
Game 3: He asked a judge if Leyline of Sanctity stopped Emrakul’s annihilator, which it doesn’t, so I assume he boarded those back out and went to the beatdown plan. I pyroclasmed a spiritdancer, had my spellskite nature’s claimed, and I think I casted Ugin through two spell pierces to run away with it again. Maybe this matchup isn’t as bad as I thought? Maybe the hyper aggressive 2-color bogles is just better. 5-3
I ended the day at 5-3 in 57th place, and will forever feel sad that I lost to elves because of a misplay. On another note, I remember referring to Ad Nauseum as “something random and tier 3” in the local Magic Facebook chat a few weeks ago. I’d like to recant that statement and find room for a third Slaughter Games in my board. I played against a grand total of zero BGx, Grixis, or Twin decks, which I expected to be about 30% of the meta combined going into this.

Hi everyone! Day 1 player here, and I've been using this sub since I picked the game up. This subreddit is great for getting the latest Destiny news, guides, advice, and events. /DestinytheGame is honestly one of the most helpful gaming communities I have ever come across, so thank you all for being a strong team through thick-and-thin.
However, despite this sub being extremely helpful, it can also be extremely confusing with all the abbreviations and phrases used by Guardians. This can intimidate newcomers from coming into this big, dysfunctional family. A family full of inside jokes, references, and guidance to give. So, I thought I'd take the opportunity to compile a Destiny Dictionary.

PLEASE NOTE: All general/universal MMORPG (massive multiplayer online role-playing game) terminologies can be found here on this guide, courtesy of neubourn. I have included a few here, but newcomers to MMOGs will find this helpful.

  • Joey: a player notorious for his lack of cooperation and communication in this Vault of Glass raid; now synonymous for a player who lacks knowledge of basic game mechanics, but insists that he/she is an expert (e.g. someone who says they can 'shatter' the Templar's barrier with a Rare-quality machine gun and even when taught the correct strategy is a 'Joey') * Important Note: to avoid being a Joey, be honest with other Guardians. If you have never run an activity such as one of the two Raids or the Prison of Elders, say so. I will emphasize again that this is one of the most helpful team-oriented gaming communities, and if you don't ask you will never get. If you are uncomfortable admitting this, then do not Raid until you have educated yourself. Watch Twitch streamers/YouTubers (e.g. my favorite, DattoDoesDestiny) to familiarize yourself with basic mechanics. Use guides provided on this subreddit or websites such as PlanetDestiny.com or DestinyDB.com. Again, if you don't ask, you never get.
  • MEGAMAN: a reddit user under the name of megamanexe4, who for a time was able to data mine Bungie servers for future Nightfall Strikes, Xur inventories, patches, DLCs etc.

  • Squeakers: pre-pubescent players (generally have a bad reputation in the gaming community of calling your mothers fat and using homosexuality as an insult, therefore inducing rage. * Note: On the contrary, a fair amount are pleasant to be in a Fireteam with. Many just need the patience and guidance to become legend. When dealing with abrasive players, be the more mature one and simply a) report them or b) tell them they are acting out of line.   • ADS: Aim Down Sights (commonly used in First Person Shooter games)
  • Adds: short for "additional"; Large mobs of enemies/additional enemies (commonly used in MMORPGs; in the case of Destiny, this refers to waves found in Strikes, Raids, and Public Events)
  • Aggro: the aggressiveness/attention of enemies (commonly used in MMORPGs; can mean two things: a) aggressiveness: depending on certain enemies, some will only retaliate when attacked, while others will attack preemptively, or b) attention: getting the enemies' attention i.e. "getting the enemy aggro" means, "I'm drawing the enemy's attention to me!")
  • AoE: Area of Effect (the damage radius of perks and Supers)
  • "Anyone need the heavy ammo glitch?": the heavy ammo trick (used during the interlude before the final fight in the Crota's End raid, but this can be done anywhere; check out IamWhiteBoy's guide to the heavy ammo trick here!)
  • Bullet sponge: an enemy that can take a massive amount of damage
  • Crotation/Crotating: "Crota is moving left/right!" (used to indicate Crota's movement during the final battle of the Crota's End raid)
  • Down [insert enemy name]!: to kill an enemy (commonly used in MMORPGs. See also: Guardian down!)
  • Guardian down!: said by Ghost when a Fireteam member dies during a PvE activity (used in this sub when a Guardian suffers serious burns from snarky Guardians)

  • RNG: Random Number Generator (best thought of as a digital lottery system: rewards/enemy spawns/etc. are chosen at random by the game. Present in most video games. See also: RNGesus, our Lord and Savior who brings either good tidings or damnation)
  • Sherpa/Sherpa'd: to guide/to be guided through any in-game activity (commonly used in MMORPGs; in the case of Destiny, this refers to more experience players helping less experienced players through Strikes, Raids, Daily Missions, etc.)
  • Spinmetal Hats: this subreddit's version of 'tinfoil hats'; used when speculating about future Destiny content e.g. "Put on your Spinmetal Hats, people!"
  • TTK: Time-To-Kill; refers to how quickly a weapon can kill an enemy; calculated through amount of headshots and/or bodyshots needed to deplete an enemy's health
  • Upmote!: used in place of 'upvote' in reference to Motes of Light
  • V/A/SB: Void/Arc/Solar burn (elemental damages that are on all special/heavy weapons and some primary weapons; use corresponding elements on enemies with shields e.g. Fallen Captain=Arc, Hive Wizards/Cabal Missileshootingthings=Solar, Vex Minotaur=Void; during Nightfall/Weekly Heroic strikes these get a buff for both allies and enemies.   • "VENUS!/MARS!": used to indicate where players are teleported during the final battle in the Vault of Glass raid (Mars is left of the entrance to the Glass Throne, Venus is right of the entrance; you can also use your radar to gauge where your teammates were teleported)
