'15-'16 Regular Season Recap
Wild Notes:
4/16/16, 9:43 AM
by FreeCandyVanDriver
Minnesota looks to find something - anything - that can spark life into their struggling team after a brutal Game 1 against a Dallas side that dominated all phases of the game. Interim Head Coach John Torchetti must find ways of generating any offense with a lineup that's decimated by injuries - a lineup that achieved just a scant 2 shots on goal in the first period - to generate legitimate scoring chances. Torchetti must find ways of keeping his boys out of the penalty box, as Minnesota took six penalties and drained the roster of both energy and consistency from the first period on. Torchetti must find ways of getting more out of a lineup that looked, to be honest, less talented and outclassed in every way against a Dallas side that is clearly hungry for a Stanley Cup run.
Minnesota's injuries to key offensive players Thomas Vanek and captain Zach Parise appear to keep them from recovering in time to come back for the series. Devan Dubnyk did not practice on Friday, with the team labeling it as a "Maintenance Day" for Dubnyk, with several sources reporting seeing Dubnyk coming from the medical room yesterday. The last time the team used the term "Maintenance Day" was the last day Parise skated with the team, and does create questions about the goaltending for a team that already looks beaten by injuries. If Dubnyk does not go, look for Kuemper to get a start, his first start in over 6 weeks. His loss could be huge, as Dubnyk (along with Porter, Suter and Spurgeon) was the only reason game one was not a 7-0 loss.
Recently hot Erik Haula appears to be making a comeback to the lineup tonight, and hopefully bringing some stability to a lineup that desperately needs it. Roster issues are rampant, with players playing out of their natural position as well as with linemates that they have rarely, if ever, lined up with this season. Torchetti is promising even more line changes for Game 2, with reports of centerman-turned-right-winger-for-game-one Mikael Granlund taking shifts on the left wing at practice yesterday. The team is obviously desperate for talent on the left side, as Jason Zucker looked like an empty jersey in his 16:29 TOI in Thursday's game.
Expect to see line combinations and positions of players that have never happened in Wild history actually happen tonight. In the playoffs. On a reeling team. With a new coach. Without their captain...
This is desperation manifesting itself, and perhaps Torchetti is out of his depth. Torchetti made some serious tactical blunders in game one, with poor decisions on both Minnesota's approach to the transition game and to their zone entry. Torchetti's tactics looked to play exactly into Dallas' strengths. With Torchetti's approach to game one, it's doubtful that any roster in the NHL would have won with Dallas playing the same system. To be fair to Torchetti, however - there's probably not a single coach in the NHL that was winning game one with this Wild roster, regardless of the tactics. Desperation manifests creativity in some coaches, and delusion in others - game two might show if Torchetti's mistakes in game one were just creativity failing him, or if it was delusional choices and tactics that may reappear in game two.
There's only so many combinations that are feasible, and with players like traditional forth line guys Porter putting up almost 15 minutes a night, it's not about finding the perfect fit as much as it is trying to cobble together one competent line capable of putting the puck in the net on a roster shortened by injuries and filled with under-performing players and not-so-gritty grinders. Minnesota -- without their captain in Parise, their best playmaker in Vanek, their hottest player down the stretch in Haula, and now possibly with a banged up or totally scratched Devan Dubnyk -- is a team that doesn't have the sheer talent to take an opponent to task, much less punish a Dallas team when they do make the rare mistake. Interim Coach Torchetti's job of getting this roster out of the first round must seem like a daunting, almost impossible task.
And, to be fair, it is.
